Malta Student Visa Requirements

For courses exceeding 105 days (non-EU/EEA students):

Document Requirements:
  • Valid Passport with minimum 8 months validity and 2 blank pages
  • Completed and signed visa application form in English with one passport-sized photo
  • Letter of Acceptance from a recognised Maltese educational institution
  • Proof of sufficient financial means equivalent to 75% of the national minimum wage for every month of study
  • Air ticket(s) to the final destination with return trip where applicable
  • Host/hotel confirmation for the duration of the course
  • Letter of sponsorship (if applicable) including copy of sponsor's identification and contact details
  • Valid medical insurance covering the entire duration of stay
  • Certified copies of diplomas, transcripts, and certificates
  • Police clearance certificate from home country (may be requested)

For studies exceeding 365 days:

  • Students must apply for a Temporary Residence Permit before the student visa expires
  • After arrival and registration, students should apply for an e-Residence Permit within the first 3 months for the duration of studies
  • The e-Residence Permit serves as an identity card and allows travel within the Schengen Area with a valid passport

Visa Application Details:

  • Visa processing time: 4-8 weeks from submission
  • Visa fee: €100 (government fee) + VFS administration fees (appointment fee of €150 for extended service)
  • Visa issued for maximum of 365 days
  • Long-stay D-Visa required for studies exceeding 105 days
  • Residence permits are typically issued for the duration of the academic year and must be renewed annually

For e-Residence Permit:

  • Minimum financial requirement: €950 per month (bank statement showing transactions for the last 3 months)
  • Must be applied for within first 3 months of arrival
  • Valid for one year of study and renewed annually subject to academic progression
