Education System in Portugal

Portugal is home to around 50 universities, over 80 polytechnics, and 6 public institutions specialising in military and law enforcement programmes. The main difference between universities and polytechnics is that universities are more focused on theoretical education, while polytechnics are dedicated to vocational studies.

Portugal follows the Bologna Process framework, which ensures standardised and mutually recognised qualifications across European higher education. The system uses the ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System), enabling credit transfer between European universities.

The three degree cycles are:

• Bachelor's (Licenciatura): 3 years, providing foundational knowledge in the chosen field.
• Master's (Mestrado): 1 to 2 years, offering specialised academic or professional training.
• Doctoral (Doutoramento): Research-focused, generally 3 to 4 years.

The academic year runs from September to July. Application deadlines for Master's programmes are typically during summer (June–July) or winter (January–February), though some universities have no fixed deadline.

Admission Requirements to Study in Portugal

To apply to a university in Portugal for a Master's, students will typically be asked to provide: a birth certificate; recent photos; passport or national identity card; one or more reference letters from past employers or teachers; copies of past diplomas or certificates including a Bachelor's degree; academic transcripts; a letter of intent; a Curriculum Vitae; and some form of proof that they can support their stay during studies.

Some Master's programmes may also require scores for additional tests like the GRE, GMAT or LSAT. Official English translations of documents may be required, or translations into Portuguese.

Language requirements: There are over 200 English-taught programmes in Portugal. Universities will want to see proof of English-language skills, almost all Portuguese universities accept PTE Academic, IELTS, TOEFL, or C1 Advanced. At universities where lectures are held in Portuguese, proof of Portuguese language skills may also be required.

Prospective students from non-EU countries are viewed as 'international students' and have the possibility to take entrance exams locally, at the Portuguese embassy in their home country, or may replace these with final exams from their home country if recognised at the local Portuguese embassy.

Portugal Visa Requirements

The Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs manages national visa applications through its official portal. Indian students who plan to study in Portugal for more than 90 days must apply for a national long-stay visa.

Types of Long-Stay Study Visas

Long-stay study visas are divided into two categories depending on the duration of the course:

• Temporary Stay Visa
  • For study programmes lasting less than one year
  • Applicable for Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD, post-doctoral, and exchange or mobility programmes
• Residency Visa
  • For study programmes lasting more than one year
  • Students must apply for a residence permit after arriving in Portugal
  • The residence permit must be applied for within 4 months of arrival

General Documents Required for Portugal Student Visa

The general documents required for a national visa application include:

• Completed national visa application form signed by the applicant
• Two recent passport-size photographs
• Valid passport or travel document (valid for at least 3 months after the return date)
• Proof of legal residence if applying from a country other than your nationality
• Valid travel insurance covering medical expenses, emergency treatment, and repatriation
• Criminal record certificate from the country of nationality or residence (with Hague Apostille if applicable)
• Proof of financial resources
• Copy of return travel ticket

Study-Specific Additional Documents

For a temporary stay visa for study purposes (less than one year), students must also provide:

• Admission letter or document issued by the educational institution
• Proof of enrolment
• Proof of accommodation or a statement from a host family

Post-Arrival Requirement

After arriving in Portugal, students must apply for a residence card (Autorização de Residência) within four months of arrival at the local authorities.
