Education System in Spain

Spain follows the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) framework, ensuring standardised and widely recognised qualifications across Europe. The system also uses ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System), allowing credit transfer between European universities.

The three main degree cycles are:

  • Undergraduate (Grado): Typically 4 years, building strong foundational knowledge in the chosen field.
  • Postgraduate (Máster): Usually 1 to 2 years, offering specialised academic or professional training.
  • Doctoral (Doctorado): Research-focused, generally 3 to 4 years.

Universities are divided into Departments, Faculties, Technical Schools, University Schools, University Institutes and University Colleges. University schools offer only Bachelor's-level courses; universities and university colleges offer Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD degrees; higher technical schools focus on engineering and architecture; and business schools are dedicated to business-related degrees.

Universities in Spain combine traditional lectures with research work and seminars where students can have open and friendly discussions with professors. For most study programmes, students prepare for both a midterm exam and a final year test for each course, in the form of a written or oral examination.

The academic year runs from October to June. Most universities have a main intake in September/October, while some programmes also offer a February intake.

Spain Visa Requirements

The following information is taken directly from the official Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (exteriores.gob.es) student visa documentation.

A student visa is not required for study stays of up to 90 days. For stays exceeding 90 days, a national student visa is required. Activities covered include: full-time higher education programmes (minimum 20 hours/week) at an authorised centre leading to a degree; doctoral studies; training activities; and Spanish or co-official language courses at schools accredited by the Instituto Cervantes.

Required Documents

Documents required for a student visa application include: the completed and signed national visa application form; a recent passport-size colour photograph; a valid passport (with at least 1 year of validity from the programme start date and two blank pages); proof of acceptance for the study programme from the Spanish institution; proof of payment or exemption of enrolment fees; proof of financial means; health insurance; criminal record certificate; and a medical certificate.

Financial Proof Requirement

The minimum required financial amount is equivalent to 100% of Spain's Public Multiple Effects Income Indicator (IPREM). Accepted proof includes scholarship letters, sponsorship letters with notarised documentation, or bank statements from the last three months.

Health Insurance

Health insurance must be registered with the General Directorate of Insurance and Pension Funds, offer coverage comparable to the Spanish National Health System, with no co-payments or deductibles, and a minimum coverage of €30,000. The insurance must cover the entire duration of the stay corresponding to the visa validity.

Criminal Record Certificate

A criminal record certificate is required for applicants aged 18 and over for stays exceeding 180 days. It must cover countries of residence for the past 5 years and be legalised/apostilled and translated into Spanish.

Visa Validity and Post-Arrival Requirement

For study stays of 6 months or less, the visa is valid for the entire duration of the stay and a Foreigner Identity Card (TIE) is not required. For stays exceeding 6 months, the visa is initially valid for 365 days, and the student must apply for a TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero — Foreigner Identity Card) within one month of entering Spain at the Foreign Nationals' Office or local police station.

Processing Time

Visa applications must be submitted at least 2 months before the start of the programme. Applications can be submitted between 6 months and 2 months before the programme begins. Allow at least 5 weeks from submission for processing. Visas for stays exceeding 90 days can only be issued once the Consulate receives authorisation from Spain, which typically takes approximately three weeks.

Note: Requirements are set per consular jurisdiction. Indian students should apply at the Spanish Embassy or Consulate in their jurisdiction in India through BLS International. Always verify current requirements with your specific consulate.
