Spain has steadily gained attention among international students for pursuing a Master of Architecture (M.Arch), thanks to its strong academic framework and deep-rooted design culture. Universities such as the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) and the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), home to the Higher Technical School of Architecture of Madrid (ETSAM), offer programmes that follow the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) standards and are widely recognised. For Indian students, planning finances in advance is important, and considering an education loan for Spain can help manage the overall cost of studying abroad.

M.Arch Programme Structure in Spain

  • Integrated 5+1 Structure:

Architecture education in Spain typically follows a 5+1 pathway. Students begin with a 5-year (300 ECTS) undergraduate degree called Grado en Fundamentos de Arquitectura, which provides foundational training but does not grant full professional status.

  • Qualifying Master’s (Habilitante):

This is followed by a 1-year (60 ECTS) Máster Habilitante en Arquitectura, which is the professional qualification required to practise as an architect. It grants the official title of “Arquitecto” and is broadly comparable to an international M.Arch.

  • Advanced & Non-Qualifying Master’s:

Apart from the Habilitante degree, universities also offer specialised architecture master’s programmes (60–90 ECTS). These focus on areas such as design, urbanism, heritage, and research, and are intended for advanced knowledge rather than licensure. For example, programmes like MBArch at Polytechnic University of Catalonia fall under this category.

  • Duration:

    1 year (qualifying M.Arch, 60 ECTS) or 1–2 years (advanced/research master's, 60–90 ECTS)

  • Language of Instruction:

Primarily Spanish. ETSAM's official programme description notes that some seminars may be held in English or other European languages, particularly where international visiting faculty are involved. UPC's MBArch is available in English and Spanish.
